The Noel Pointer Foundation has established string music artist-in-residence programs, teaching children across the ethnic spectrum. To date, we offer four programs; an in-curricular program for Pre-K through twelfth grade, an after school program for at-risk children, a Saturday program and a Summer Music program.
In-curricular programs are taught as part of the children’s school curriculum. Each individual institution integrates our music program into the school day, making music a vital part of the day.
The after school programs are tailored to each school’s preference, allowing children to receive lessons after the school day. Generally, they are run immediately following dismissal and vary in length of time, contingent upon the number of students and which musical disciplines are being taught.
Saturday Sessions are available each school year and are tuition based. Saturday lessons begin in October and every Saturday thereafter until June. Session times vary, most are generally between the hours of 9am to 1pm. Core curriculum, independent music classes, private instruction, music theory and ensemble classes are all available. Please see the following descriptions in order to decide which classes are suitable for your child.
Group (Ensemble) classes reinforce what is taught during private lessons. Equally important, group playing refines individual skill, encourages cooperation, teaches teamwork and offers the joy of creating music with others. The ensemble program is an integral part of the music curriculum. The classes are divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced; each taught in separate rooms.
Music Theory - Each student taking private lessons or ensemble must register for theory class. Class level is determined by a placement exam given before each semester. Classes are graded and promotions are based on exam scores given during assessment period. Note: Students must pass the exam before progressing to the next level, and must take theory for each semester, both Fall & Spring.
Private lessons are available for violin, viola, cello and bass.
The following courses are available for those WHO ARE NOT enrolled in private / group / theory lessons:
Musical Exploration for Preparatory Students - This course introduces young people, ages 4-8, to basic musical concepts such as pitch, rhythm and musical notations. This is an ideal preparatory course for children interested in studying music.
Music Appreciation Workshop - An informal overview of the larger, broader mysteries of music, and music’s role in world history, politics and society. Included in this course are lectures and discussions on a variety of different musical styles and traditions, including Hip Hop, POP, Funk, Jazz, Classical, music of different cultures, chance music and contemporary modern soundscapes. Additionally, students are expected to participate in daily activities, game play and discussions on all aspects of music and music making, including aural skills, conducting skills, contemporary composition and improvisation.
Orchestra Training Class - Provides students with an introduction to playing in a string ensemble. Students utilize music theory, musicianship, rhythm and sight-reading skills while learning to interact with fellow musicians and follow a conductor. All students are required to take this class.
